Black Gummy is another DJ/Producer in the scene rapidly growing with the support from deadmau5, Feed Me, NERO, REZZ as well as playing at major festivals such as EDC, Electric Zoo, Middlelands, Electric Forest, Das Energi. And that also means playing at great clubs around the world like Webster Hall, Exchange, Audio, Avalon and many more. Following the release of "Singularity" and "Impactor", he just released a new EP "Monolith". Let's hear about the production and his coming schedules.

Q1. Congratulations on your " Monolith EP" release. Can you tell us more about it?

Monolith is my third EP, which is the final installment of a three-part arc of themes I wanted to explore. Singularity, the first ep, explored humanity’s relationship with technology; Impactor, the second, was inspired by the Earth’s long and complex relationship with all forms of life (human and otherwise); and I came up with the concept behind Monolith, the third, after thinking a lot about the value that humans place on symbols. In terms of the music, for Monolith I took a slightly more minimal approach, writing the music based off of inspiration I got through visiting different archeological sites. One specific idea which had a big impact on my writing was the idea of creating extreme contrast to make something small feel much bigger than it actually is. This technique is used a lot in architecture and can also be applied in music. The three EPs are key to the BlackGummy narrative. In order to understand the rest of the story and existence of the bear-shaped idol, it's key to understand that the idol existed throughout different time periods, including the periods explored in each EP (future, past, and present, resepectively).

Q2. How is your Summer so far?

My summer has been great, thanks for asking. This would probably have to be one of the most fulfilling summers I've ever had. When I first started producing, I was really just a bedroom producer. I didn’t DJ much. But I’ve spent the past 2 years really dedicated to becoming a better DJ by just practicing a lot. And this summer I got to perform a lot. So it’s been great.

Q3. Can you pick 1 or 2 artists you currently admire for their work and tell us why?

deadmau5 and Eric Prydz are definitely two artists I have a lot of respect for, not only for their level of mastery but for their ability to produce so many different styles of music while keeping their own unique, identifying sound.

Q4. Are there any artists you would like to collaborate with?

I'm actually working on a few collaborations right now with some artists I really like which I can't announce yet.

Q5. Which track would be your favourite from your own work and what inspired you to produce that track?

It's hard to choose one specific song as my favorite, especially since to me some of them reflect different times in my life. Lullaby if one of the more sentimental tracks to me since I created the song after recording a small toy lullaby which I grew up listening to and that song ended up being the first song I signed to mau5trap. As far as my favorite songs to play live I’d have to say Alarm, NeverDeader and Iconoclast are my favorite tracks for large crowds or at festivals. As for warehouse or any underground shows, my favorite song to play is Decent + the VIP edit.

Q6. Do you have any tips you could share with aspiring producers looking to improve their skills?

Don't be afraid to fail, learn from your mistakes and keep making music. The more you do it, the more of an understanding you will have for what works and what doesn't work. The more of an understanding you build for how everything works the better your decision making process becomes while producing music which will end up making your overall production sound much better.

Q7. Please leave a message for your fans in Japan.

I hope to come to Japan soon and share the world of BlackGummy with you all.

Black Gummy is slowly but definitely reaching out to more places from his home base in LA. Following his releases from mau5trap, he continues to deliver quality work to his fans. It won't take long for him to come to Japan and Asia and make the fans go wilder than ever. Stay tuned to the upcoming artists Black Gummy.
